Quantum Hall effect in graphene: Interface makes a difference

This video describes the physical process of interfacial charge order driven band reconstruction of Dirac fermion in a monolayer graphene, and hence the modification of the quantum Hall effect in the system.

Quantum Hall edge states are known to be an ingredient for realizing quantum excitation states such as Majorana fermions when coupled to superconductivity – a route toward quantum computation. However, quantum Hall often requires extreme experimental conditions of very low temperature and high magnetic fields, which hold it back from practical applications. We discovered a new van der Waal hybrid system in which an unusually robust quantum Hall phase is realized, due to the coupling between graphene and an interfacial charge order in CrOCl.
